Our Mount Pleasant Hospital development in Swansea has joined a record number of parks and green spaces across Wales that have reached the high standards required to fly the coveted Green Flag.

Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy has revealed the 280 sites that have received the internationally renowned Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award.

The flag was raised at Coastal Housing’s redeveloped Mount Pleasant Hospital on Tuesday 18th July to recognise its environmental efforts and community involvement.

Now in its third decade, the Green Flag Award recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world. In Wales, the awards scheme is run by Keep Wales Tidy. Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said: “Free access to safe, high-quality green space has never been more important. Our award-winning sites play a vital role in people’s mental and physical well-being, providing a haven for communities to come together, relax and enjoy nature.

“News that 280 parks and green spaces in Wales have achieved Green Flag Awards is testament to the hard work of hundreds of staff and volunteers. We’re delighted to be able to celebrate their success on the world stage.”

Coastal’s Chief Executive Debbie Green said: “We have always prided ourselves on the curb-appeal of our sites but we wanted to do more to support wildlife and help tackle the climate and biodiversity crises. A few years ago, our Estates teams began planting trees, creating wildflower meadows and leaving some grassed areas unmown; increasing the ecological benefits of our land.

“Winning a national award for the quality of the green space at Mount Pleasant Hospital, a site with such significance in Swansea’s history, recognises the innovation and hard work of our Estates colleagues and shows our new approach is working and that we are providing healthier, more inspiring homes for people and wildlife. This award gives us great encouragement to continue to create more spaces like Mount Pleasant Hospital.”
