If were previously charged for your rent weekly, the way you are charged has now changed.

If you have a secure contract we wrote to you to explain that from April 1st 2024 we will charge your rent monthly not weekly. You can continue to pay your rent weekly if that is your preference. If yours changed your new rent change notification would have arrived at the end of January 2024 and this will show your new monthly charge.

Why we made these changes

Changing the way we charge you for your rent from weekly to monthly will bring you in line with most residents in Coastal, all new rents are all charged monthly so the option to be charged weekly has not been offered for some time.

All utilities, most peoples’ wages and subscriptions also now get paid or charged monthly, so it also brings us in line with these.

If you are on Universal Credit this change will actually benefit you as in 2024 due to the number of Mondays in the year you would have been charged 53 weeks rent but this change means you will only be charged 12 monthly payments.

What do I need to do?

You can still pay your rent exactly the same way you do now.

Will this affect how I pay?

Will this make me in arrears?

The full month’s rent will be charged on the 1st of each month. So, depending how you pay, the balance of your account may look different. When will this change take effect?

The change took affect on 1st April 2024. We sent the notice to you in January 2024 alongside your rent change notification which showed your new monthly charge.

Do I now need to pay a month in advance as my current contract says I need to pay a week in advance?

The full month’s rent needs to be paid before the end of the month. So on the last day of the month your account should have a zero balance. You have between the 1st and the last day of the month to pay.

What resident engagement have you done regarding the changes?

We wrote to all residents on secure contracts who were charged weekly and they were given the opportunity to provide us with their views on the changes. We received a small number of responses, including a number who confirmed they were happy with the change, and no objections to the proposal. Any individual queries were responded to.
